What Are Ketogenic Diets

The January resolutions are in full swing, so you've probably heard of the ketogenic diet, the modern eating plan that requires getting more than 70% of the total calories from fat, about 20% of the proteins and 10% or less of carbohydrates. . The general idea is to enter a metabolic state known as ketosis, when your body burns fat as fuel.

You may also have heard of a Keto 30 Challenge, a one-month diet program marketed by KetoLogic that includes a large number of special supplements. Honest Keto Diet, a company recently introduced in Shark Tank, sells similar weight loss pills. Costly keto supplements include ingredients such as ketones designed to suppress appetite, electrolytes for the dehydrating effects of the diet, certain vitamins and minerals, and even caffeine.

The packaging claims are also plentiful: they claim that they will help you achieve ketosis in "three days", "fuel efficiency" and "clear brain fog", among other benefits. The problem is that these powders and pills have a considerable financial cost and could have some undesirable and undesirable consequences for your health.

While the keto diet pauses me for several reasons (and you can read all about them here), these keto supplements worry me even more. This is what you need to know before spending $ 150 on a 30-day "challenge".

Keto supplements can alter your metabolism.
When you are in a state of starvation, your body uses ketones for energy in a similar way to how they are used in a ketogenic diet, as fuel, and converts them into glucose. In this state, all those ketones also stimulate an increase in leptin (the hormone that makes you feel full) and a decrease in ghrelin (the hormone that stimulates appetite). The higher the concentration of ketones in the blood, the less hunger you will feel. Why? Because in the history of human evolution, periods of famine forced our bodies to adapt, so that it would be less likely to eat something poisonous if there were no food available to you. Here in the 21st century: taking ketone supplements to help improve this biological process will probably decrease appetite by raising the levels of ketone bodies in the blood.

What's the trick? The ketogenic state has been related to the increase of satiety hormones and the decrease of hunger hormones, well researched during the initial phase. But once you have finished the keto diet after 30 days, the hormones that suppress your appetite will increase significantly from your baseline. Which means you're probably feeling physically hungrier than before you started all this nonsense in your diet
